Mikumi is part of a much larger ecosystem that is centered on the uniquely vast Selous Game Reserve. The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mikumi Park draw frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti plains.
Lions foray majestically over this grassy kingdom and the zebra, wildebeest, impala and buffalo herds that migrate across it. Giraffes forage in the isolated acacia that fringe the Mkata River and provide islets of shade for the Mikumi elephant herds.
Flat topped termite mounds make ideal and reliable place for sighting wildlife while several good circuit of game viewing roads across the Mkata floodplain make Mikumi the most easily accessible game park in Tanzania.
More than 400 bird species have been recorded within the Mikumi National Park. Hippos provide the star attraction of a pair of pools situated 5km north of the main entrance gate to the park.
